T his
choir was set up by the Caja Insular de Ahorros de Gran Canaria. Its début
in Society ocurred in 1968. From the very beginning of its career, the
founder and director, Juan José Falcón
Sanabria traced out an original style for the choir which has always
performed a wide compendium of musical pieces, from classical through to
contemporary arrangements.
Recognition for the choir's merits did not take lont to appear. Two first prizes in national contests of Choral and Dance Groups, organized by the Sección Femenina, marked the beginning of a star-studded career. Among many other activities of the choir, perhaps the most important are its constant presence in the Día Internacional del Canto Coral (International Choral Day), held every year in Barcelona (above all, in 1979, when it was chosen to represent Spain in the concert of the closing ceremony), its multiple tours around the provinces of Andalusia and Asturias, its participation in the IV Encuentro de Polifonía Juvenil (the IVth edition of Youth Polyphonics) in Cuenca (1983), the Encuentro Coral del Mediterráneo (Mediterranean Choirs) in Málaga (1988) and the Semana de Música Contemporánea (Contemporary Music Week) in Madrid (1990), as well as the invitation that the Canarian Goverment to take part in the Acts of the "Año Santo Xacobeo 93". In 1978 the Coral Polifónica began its international appearances, taken part since then in famous International Choir Festivals. As of 1981, the Coral Polifónica de Las Palmas embarked upon a process of collaboration with the Philarmonic Orchestra of Las Palmas, thereby giving fruit to an interesting symphonic-choral repertory. The choir has interpreted various pieces by Spanish, above all Canary composers which had never previously been performed, which works it is possible to find in its recordings. The Coral Polifónica de la U.L.P.G.C. has also recorded on various occasions for the RTVE (Spanish Radio-Television) both on the regional and the national network, in programmes such as: "España en directo" (Spain live), "Nuestro Arte" (Our Art), "Conciertos de Navidad" (Chritsmas Concerts), "Documento" (Document), "Concierto Sacro de Semana Santa" (Holy Week Concert), a programme for the television in Latvia (USSR), Canal 1 of the Swedish television and various broadcasts from the Teatro Pérez Galdós. |
